Take Evenings and Weekends Off and Skip Auto-Updates

Relax Weekends

2020 is already stressful enough for all of us. So as we build new Watchful features, we’re looking for ways to make your agency life calmer.

The new “Update Scheduler” allows you to choose when site auto-updates will NOT occur. This lets you relax on weekends or vacations, without having to worry about site updates.

If you use WordPress, you’ll find that the Update Scheduler will soon become extra-useful, because auto-updates are coming to the WordPress core.

This week, we improved the Update Scheduler so it’s even easier to take evenings and weekends off without worrying about a bad auto-update.

To see the new changes, go to Update Scheduler in your Watchful account. Here you can create your rules for when auto-updates will not occur. Both Weekdays (Mon-Fri) and Weekends (Sat-Sun) are new options.

How to skip auto-updates

If you want to prevent any auto-updates in the evening, choose these options:

  1. Choose an exclusion rule type: Weekdays (Mon-Fri)
  2. Select a scope for the rule: You can leave this setting on the default.
  3. Select when the rule should begin: Choose the time when your evening begins.
  4. Select when the rule should stop: Choose the time when your work day starts.

And if you want to prevent any auto-updates on the weekend, select these options:

  1. Choose an exclusion rule type: Weekends (Sat-Sun).
  2. Select a scope for the rule: You can leave this setting on the default.
  3. Select when the rule should begin: Choose Beginning of the day.
  4. Select when the rule should stop: Choose End of the day.

You can see more examples of these rules on our introduction to the Update Scheduler. These include “No updates around a major new version”, “No updates during the holidays” and “No updates during your vacation”.

Auto-updates should increase your peace of mind

Auto-updates have been working successfully with the WordPress core for seven years now and as we mentioned, will also extend to cover plugins and themes too.

Auto-updates for both WordPress and Joomla have been live on the Watchful platform since October 2019. We already run hundreds of successful auto-updates every day. You can trust Watchful to keep your sites safe and you can trust these new auto-updates too.

But there is always a chance of things going wrong with any software update. And auto-updates in WordPress run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Watchful can help.

With these new Update Scheduler features you get the benefit of auto-updates, plus the ability to keep a good work-life balance. And there are other peace-of-mind features such as skipping updates if you don’t have a recent backup.
