The three types of backups in Watchful

There are three types of backups in Watchful:

  1. Manual
  2. Queue-based
  3. Scheduled

This video illustrates each of these backup types using Akeeba Backup Pro. However, each backup type may be used with any of the supported backup plugins/extensions in Watchful such as the All In One WordPress Migration plugin for WordPress or Akeeba Backup Core version 6.x and earlier.

Manual backups

Manual backups are initiated directly by the user and occur in real time. While convenient, additional tasks in the dashboard can not be performed until the backup is complete.

To perform a manual backup:

  1. Log in to the Watchful dashboard.
  2. Click on the website name you want to backup. This opens the site drawer.
  3. When the site drawer opens, click the Start Backup button. A progress indicator will open allowing you to monitor the backup process.

Queue-based backups

Queue-based backups are convenient when multiple sites require backups before proceeding with other maintenance. Sites added to the backup queue are performed when the next available spot(s) in our backup queue is available.

Backup queues are useful when some, but not all, of the sites in your dashboard have recent backupos. It allows the user to perform maintenance on the sites that do have a recent backup while the other sites are backed up in the background.

To add sites to the backup queue:

  1. Log in to the Watchful dashboard.
  2. Select the desired websites using the checkbox selectors on the left.
  3. Click the Add to backup queue button in the toolbar at the top.
  4. Monitor the Last backup column in the dashboard to see when the backup is complete.

Scheduled backups

Scheduled backups are the best way to maximize the efficency of your maintenace workflow. Ideally, you will schedule your backs such that all of the sites needing maintenance are already backed up when you log into your Watchful dashboard. This allows you to proceed with site maintenance without delay.

To configure schedule backups:

  1. Log in to the Watchful dashboard.
  2. Click on the website name you want to backup. This opens the site drawer.
  3. When the site drawer opens, click the Edit Site button.
  4. Choose the backup plugin/extension of your choosing and set the backup frequency and time of day.
